On February 6, 1971, astronaut Alan Shepard made history by hitting a golf ball on the moon during the Apollo 14 mission. To do so, he used a makeshift golf club that was specially designed for the lunar environment. The club consisted of a modified tool that was attached to a golf club head, which was used to hit a ball that had been smuggled aboard the spacecraft. The club was designed to be lightweight and had a collapsible shaft to save space on the mission. The golf shot, which was estimated to have traveled about 200 yards in the low-gravity environment, was Shepard's way of demonstrating the physical capabilities of astronauts on the moon.
